WELCOME BACK STUDENTS!!
I hope everyone is feeling well rested and ready to return to some semblance of a class! This is going to be a bit of a change for most, but hopefully we can all transition smoothly to online learning. As a reminder, our course will be structured as follows:
Mondays: I will post any notes/videos/assignment
Wednesday: I will post a link to a zoom meeting at 1:00 where you can come ask me questions about the assignment or simply say hi! If you have questions at other times, please feel free to send me an e-mail (look at the home page of this website for my e-mail) or you can write in the discussion blog (others in the class might be able to help you out as well)
Friday: On Friday you will e-mail me your completed assignment. Either send me the digital copy or take a picture of your assignment and e-mail me the photo (try and ensure your photo is not blurry so I can read it).
FOR THIS SHORT WEEK (APRIL 16 AND 17):
Since you have had such a long break, for this week (today and Friday) you are not expected to do too much - simply finish the novel! I know most of you have already done this, however if you finished it back in March, it might be worthwhile to re-read, or skim, from page 99 until the end. On Monday of next week, I will post the assignment for the week, which will be comprehension questions on the events that took place from page 99 until the end. If you do not have your copy of the novel with you, simply scroll up and I included a link to an e-text version of the novel that you can use.
Your second task is to post in the discussion board! There is a button on the main English page that will bring you to the discussion board. Simply tell me how you are feeling/how your spring break was/what you've been up to since I last saw you. KEEP IT CLEAN AND SCHOOL APPROPRIATE! I will delete anything that is not appropriate :)
Have a good week and I will chat with you again on Monday for our first official week back! Enjoy your weekend and get outside to soak up some of the sunshine we're finally getting.
Apr. 20 - 24
Hello everyone and welcome to week 2 of online class! I hope you all had a restful weekend and were able to complete the homework from last week (finishing the novel). Thank you Gabby and Alex for commenting on the discussion like I had asked! Next time I post a discussion question I hope more of you respond :)
For this week you have 2 tasks:
1. Complete the comprehension questions for the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Be sure to answer in full sentences. It is probably easiest to answer the questions right on the word document (if you do, use a different font so it's easy for me to see where your answer is), however if you want to print out the questions and handwrite the answers, that's ok too. Once you are done, you can e-mail me your completed questions.
2. Watch the following video reviewing the plot diagram of a short story and read through the notes. Your assignment next week will involve understanding how the plot diagram works.
I will be providing a link in the next couple of days to a zoom meeting on Wednesday at 1:00. If you have any questions about the assignment (or previous assignments), you can join the meeting and ask me via video chat. If this doesn't work, you can always send me an e-mail with your question OR comment on the discussion board with your question.
Have a good week everyone and be sure to get outside and enjoy the amazing weather we are having!
THIS WEEK'S ZOOM MEETING:

APR. 27 - MAY 1
Hello everyone! Welcome to week three of online courses. I hope you had an enjoyable week and weekend. I have received the comprehension questions from some of you however am still waiting on them from quite a few. I really encourage you to stick to my assigned due dates to avoid falling behind.
Before I discuss your task for this week, I want to give everyone a heads up that interim reports should be sent out in the mail sometime within the next week or two. Some of you might see an I (for incomplete) on your interim report and the reason for this is simply because I am missing a lot of work from you. If you have not yet completed and handed in your compare/contrast essay, you might see an I on your interim report. PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR COMPARE/CONTRAST ESSAY! This is the only essay we will be writing in English 9. If you are missing other assignments from the short story unit, make the compare/contrast essay your priority. This is the most important assignment we've done so far in the course.
This is our last week for the novel study. You have one task this week, however it is a bit of a larger assignment. Last week, you should have watched the video I included reviewing the plot diagram of a short story as well as read the notes I included about the various elements of a short story.
Your task for this week:
1. You will be writing another chapter for the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time India. Please read through the assignment here for more detailed instructions on what must be included in your chapter. THERE ARE REQUIREMENTS ON HOW YOUR CHAPTER MUST BE STRUCTURED SO READ THE ASSIGNMENT BEFORE BEGINNING!
2. Use this cheat sheet on how to properly use dialogue in a story. If you are unclear about any rules or if you are unsure whether you are using them properly, PLEASE ASK!
Similar to last week, I will be uploading the link to an optional zoom meeting on Wednesday at 1:00. This is simply a time for you to check in and just say hi, or to ask questions on this assignment (or a previous one). I will not be providing a lesson during this session. Think of it as "office hours". Additionally, as always, I am available for help via e-mail. Please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail if you have any questions throughout the week. I will also make another discussion post available for anyone who would like to ask a question using this platform instead.
Have fun writing your chapter and I look forward to reading them! Enjoy your week!

MAY 4 - MAY 8:
Welcome back from a hopefully relaxing and enjoyable weekend! I hope you all had fun writing the next chapter for The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. We have now completed our novel study and are moving on to something new. This week you are going to read about how to efficiently summarize articles. I have attached a powerpoint with some great notes on summarizing. Within the power point are some practice examples. Please try them and then compare your responses with the ones provided at the end of the powerpoint. I have also attached a practice assignment. You can either print out the assignment and send me a picture of your handwritten answers or you can type out your responses on a word document.
TASK:
1. Read through this powerpoint
2. Complete the summarization assignment here
As per the last few weeks, there will be optional office hours on Wednesday starting at 1:00 for anyone who needs help with the assignment. Again, there will not be a lesson during this time, it is simply an opportunity for you to connect with me via video chat to receive help or to simply say hi :) Stay tuned for the zoom URL.
Also as usual, you can use the English 9 discussion page to ask questions or you can simply e-mail me.
Have a good week everyone!

MAY 11 - 15
Hello all! This week we are continuing with assignments related to reading non-fiction articles. This week, your focus will be on learning how to properly research using online databases as well as determine whether online resources are reliable or not. This skill will be very important as you move forward in your academic career. Your tasks for this week are as follows:
1. First, you will read through the powerpoint on "Conducting Research Online". As you read through, you will fill in this note-taking sheet
2. Then, you will then complete the CARS Website Evaluation worksheet
3. Finally, you will fill out the "Research Notes Assignment"
Please wait until all 3 are complete before e-mailing your completed assignments to me.
As usual, I will be available for office hours on Wednesday starting at 1:00 (URL to come). If no one checks in, I will end the session at 1:30. I am also always available via e-mail for questions or you can post on the blog/discussion page.
Have fun and be sure to get outside and enjoy some sunshine!
****UPDATE!
Hi everyone, it was brought to my attention that the link for the "note taking sheet" was broken. I have fixed it, so you should be able to access it now. Also, I was thinking about it and I am a bit worried I may have overloaded you with work this week. What I am going to do is say that the note-taking sheet and the CARS website evaluation worksheet should be completed for sure this week and then submitted for Friday. If you are able to also get the "Research Notes Assignment" completed for Friday, great! If not, I will not make this one due until next Friday (May 22). Unfortunately, due to the dwindling time left in the semester, I will still be posting more material next week as well, but my hope is that you can slowly chip away at that assignment over 2 weeks if you are finding that this week has too much work attached to it.
Also, for the CARS website evaluation, I didn't provide any explanation for what you are supposed to do for the "Websites: Can You Spot the Fake" section. All you have to do is go to the URL posted under "Name of Site" and using your knowledge of CARS, determine whether it is a real site or a hoax (fake) website. You need to provide 2 reasonings supporting your decision based on the CARS method.
Hope this helps!
OFFICE HOURS FOR TODAY WEDNESDAY, MAY 13TH

MAY 19 - 22
Hello all and welcome to week #6 of virtual learning! I hope you all had an enjoyable long weekend. The last couple of weeks we have been focussing on academic writing and how to summarize articles and determine the reliability of online sources. I have received last week's work from some of you, however if you have not yet finished it, that's ok. Try and send it in to me as soon as you can. I will begin marking it this week and e-mail you back your marked assignments.
This week, we will be shifting to...POETRY! Now I realize that poetry can be a tough subject to learn even in a normal classroom setting let alone virtually. Therefore, our poetry unit is going to be quite small (sorry to those of you who love poetry!) This week, you will read over some notes on important terms that you might see when discussing poetry along with some important types of figurative language (some of these will be repetitive from when we discussed them in class a few months ago). Then you will look at some different types of rhyme schemes and create a few of your own poems!
Your task for this week:
1. Read through the poetry terms notes
2. Read through the Rhyme Scheme notes with examples and complete the assignment at the bottom of the document.
I will be available via e-mail if anyone has questions throughout the week or you can post them on the discussion page. As per usual, there will also be a zoom session "office hours" on Wednesday starting at 1:00 for anyone who would like to ask me a question via zoom. Like usual, if no one signs on, I will end the session at 1:30.
Have a great week and I hope you enjoy trying your hand at a little bit of poetry! Get creative!
TODAY'S (WEDNESDAY, MAY 20) "OFFICE HOURS" AT 1:00

MAY 25 - 29:
Good morning everyone! You are now officially on the home stretch of the school year as we enter the final 3 weeks! Way to go! Hang in there just a bit longer, you're doing great :)
I hope you all had some fun playing around with various rhyme schemes last week. This week, you will do a formal analysis of a special type of poem: a song! Your job for this week is to choose a song, ideally one you like, and to fill out this worksheet. The assignment is saved as a PDF in adobe and I included some comments in the assignment, but I will also provide them here in case you aren't able to open the document in adobe.
1. For #14, it might help to read the poem out loud. This will allow you to really listen to the sound of the poem/lyrics as you read. Think about whether there is a pattern on which syllables are emphasized and which aren't. Count the syllables in each line. Does every line have the same number of syllables? Is there an alternating pattern? Which lines simply sound rhythmic?
2. For #15, mood refers to the feeling a piece evokes in a reader (for ex: spooky, creepy, euphoric, joyful, sorrowful, nostalgic, angry etc.) where as tone refers to the poet's feelings about a topic. Different aspects of the poem such as sentence structure, punctuation and words used can convey the poet's tone about something. For example, the use of shorter sentences can convey annoyance versus longer sentences which can convey anxiety or lack of confidence.
As usual, there will be a zoom session for "office hours" on Wednesday the 27th at 1:00. I will provide the URL to the session either tomorrow or Wednesday. I will be available for the full hour however if no one turns up, I will end them at 1:30. Please feel free to stop by with any questions.
If you are curious what the rest of the semester is going to look like, see the schedule below:
May 25 - 29: song lyric poetry analysis assignment
June 1 - 5: final portfolio assignment (this will replace a final exam)
June 8 - 12: Hand in portfolio assignment; last week to finish up any outstanding assignments
I hope you have fun analyzing a favourite song of yours and I encourage you to ensure you spend some time outside everyday!

JUNE 1 - 5
Good morning everyone. Today is the day! Today I post your FINAL assignment for English 9. Over this semester, you have completed a few writing assignments. Now is your chance to show me your best work. This week you will be completing your Final Portfolio to showcase your writing. Think of this as your final exam. Your portfolio will include the following:
- a revised version of ONE of you written assignments (see the Final Portfolio Assignment to see which assignments you can choose from to revise)
- one new piece I haven't seen before.
- a cover letter
Please click on the Final Portfolio Assignment to get a more in-depth overview of the requirements for this assignment. You will either e-mail the portfolio to me as ONE document BEFORE JUNE 8th or you can print it out and bring a hardcopy to the school also BEFORE JUNE 8th. In addition, June 8th will be the LAST DAY I am accepting assignments for this course.
This week will also be my last week of "office hours". I will post the URL for the zoom session either tomorrow or Wednesday. As usual, I will be available to help or answer questions from 1:00-2:00 however if no one joins, I will end the session at 1:30.
Before I go I also want to say thank you guys for being an awesome English class! I have really enjoyed watching you grow as writers! I am very sad that we were unable to end the course in a classroom setting. I hope you enjoyed the course and feel you have improved in your abilities as an English student. I know this online learning environment is not very conducive for learning for most students, so I appreciate all the effort you folks have been putting in to getting your assignments done and navigating this online classroom.
Good luck with your final portfolios, don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions! I look forward to reading them :)
OFFICE HOURS FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 3RD
